Gilbert Al Masterson, M.D.

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Masterson completed his Residency in Adult Psychiatry at Harvard University School of Medicine and his Fellowship in Child Psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In Grand Rapids, Michigan he has served as Medical Director of Inpatient/Partial Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Services, Medical Director of ADHD Institute, Medical Director of Adolescent Residential Services, and President of Medical Staff at Pine Rest Psychiatric Hospital. He also served as Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatric Services and Medical Director for the Trauma Recovery Center at Forest View Psychiatric Hospital. 

Dr. Masterson has joined Sanford Behavioral Health as Chief Medical Officer. He heads up the medical team, and manages all medical interventions within Sanford facilities. Dr. Masterson has a special interest in dual-diagnosis evaluation and treatment, and he has long been involved in the research of medications that decrease craving for addictive substances. Dr. Masterson’s role at Sanford is to help psychiatrically evaluate patients and try to understand how a patient’s psychiatric symptoms may tempt them to have increased use of substances. He says, “I want to provide treatment to help decrease these symptoms.”

Dr. Masterson most recently served as Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at the Cleveland Clinic, Akron General. When he is not working, Dr. Masterson spends his time with his wife and family.

Dr. Masterson says, “At long last, we have treatment that has been so desperately needed in West Michigan.”
