Mental Health Residential
Residential treatment for mental health conditions means you reside with us for a period of time. Our Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus in Marne, Michigan, provides a structured living environment in which to recover and removes the environmental obstacles to recovery. Residential patients live at Sanford West while they attend group, individual, and family therapy sessions. Additionally, our patients receive medical and psychiatric check-ups and participate in wellness activities. This option provides 24/7 nursing support and access to our clinical and medical teams.
Mental Health Residential addresses the debilitating symptoms of a mental health diagnosis. Our multi-disciplinary team uses comprehensive assessments to ensure proper diagnosis and individualized treatment plans. Residential treatment is focused on evaluation, stabilization, skill acquisition, and smooth transition to long-term treatment management.
What We Treat
- Mood Disorders: This includes major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and disruptive dysregulation disorder. Are you:

- Manic episodes with decreased sleep
- Hyperverbal (talks fast and A LOT)
- Weight loss
- Struggling to complete activities of daily living due to a lack of motivation
- Psychosis

Anxiety Disorders: Including generalized anxiety disorders, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and OCD. Do you have:
- Panic attacks when leaving home
- Panic attacks in groups
- Rituals around washing your hands
- Anxious feelings throughout the day

Trauma Disorders: Such as PTSD, dissociative disorders, acute stress reactions, and adjustment disorders. Are you experiencing:
- Dissociation as a stress response
- Fight, flight, or freeze responses
- Isolated incidents of verbal aggression or physical aggression
- Flashbacks
- Nightmares
Personality Disorders: Including borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and schizoaffective disorder. Do you experience:

- Triangulation (drawing a third person into a conflict or decision) with family and friends
- Triangulation between admissions & clinical or within clinical relationships
- Maladaptive ways of getting your needs met
- Grandiose thinking
Symptoms: Such as self-harm, suicidality, and treatment-interfering behaviors.

- Emotional dysregulation that shows up as suicidal thinking

What to Expect
Admissions & Intake Process
- Pre-Screen & Scheduling
- The admissions team conducts a pre-screen assessment and informs you about the Mental Health Residential program details prior to scheduling.
- You will receive an “What to Expect” email that will be updated to reflect the information needed.
- Admission Days/Times
- Admissions take place before 5:00 PM daily.
- Arrival Process
- Safety Screenings: UA, PBT, Pregnancy test, ETG, and more
- Admissions Intake
- Medical Screening & Skin Check
- Safety Search & Heat Treating of Belongings
- Belongings Retention - items may be held based on clinical or medical judgment.
Initial Medical And Clinical Services
- Primary Provider, Dr. Bhandari, completes a health and physical examination within 24 hours.
- A nursing intake is completed within 8 hours of arrival. An intake is your initial assessment and data collection when you arrive at Sanford. It involves gathering comprehensive information about your medical history, current symptoms, and relevant social or psychological factors.
- A Sanford team member completes a biopsychosocial assessment (BPS). A BPS is a comprehensive evaluation that examines the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors.
Safety & Monitoring
- Our bedrooms are comfortable and attractive, with artwork, desks, and private storage. Residents share a room, which offers an opportunity to make friends and share experiences.
- Clinical and non-clinical programming is separate and distinct from other programming at Sanford West.
- Sanford Mental Health Residential clients may access the designated outdoor smoking area.
- There are no off-site trips, but clients can utilize the fitness center, lounges, and Sanford Cafe if appropriate.
- Q 30 rounds (30-minute visual checks) are completed for all mental health residents. Q 30 rounds ensure our residents' well-being and safety. The frequency is adjusted based on clinical and medical need.
- A suicide risk assessment is completed for each resident. Residents fill out a check-in & check-out sheet 2x daily that will assess for risk factors and the presence of suicidal thinking or behaviors
- Clients who experience suicidal thinking will contract for safety on a day-to-day basis in order to remain in residential level of care
Support
- You will have 24/7 support from a resident support specialist (RSS) exclusive to the Mental Health Residential program. Your RSS will (among other things) complete 30-minute rounds.
- 24/7 nursing support
- Sanford provides a separate group and lounge space for downtime. Mental health residents may also use women's or men's SUD lounges if clinically appropriate.
- Meals are in the Sanford Cafe and shared with the residents in SUD treatment.
Clinical Interventions for Mental Health Residential
- Group clinical programming will include DBT, CBT, RO DBT, ACT, narrative therapy, relapse prevention planning, experiential therapies, process groups & more.
- Family therapy will be a recommended intervention during treatment.
- The goals of treatment are to support our clients. Support includes symptom reduction but also helping clients get their needs met in safer, more adaptive ways. We also address the underlying root cause of symptoms.
- Many of our clients struggle with self-soothing and regulating their emotions. They are here to learn these strategies through treatment and with staff support and modeling (co-regulation).
Is Our Mental Health Residential Program Right for You?
Admission Criteria
- Adults aged 18 and older.
- Voluntary Admission
- The patient must be willing to engage in residential treatment and be capable of providing informed consent. All residents must be able to engage in treatment and benefit from a therapeutic, community-based environment.
- Individuals must be medically stable and not require acute medical or inpatient hospital care.
- No active infections or conditions requiring IV medications or frequent medical interventions.
- Residents must be independently ambulatory or require minimal assistance with activities of daily life.
- Patients with controlled chronic medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, asthma) are eligible.
- Patients with seizure disorders must be well-controlled
- No unstable or progressive neurological conditions (e.g., acute stroke, uncontrolled epilepsy).
- Must not be actively withdrawing from substances or require medical detoxification. If so, individuals are admitted to the Sanford Detox Center.
- Residents must have a primary psychiatric diagnosis as defined by the DSM-5 or the latest edition, including but not limited to:
- Major Depressive Disorder
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Bipolar Disorder (non-acute phase)
- PTSD
- OCD
- Personality Disorders (e.g., Borderline, Avoidant, Dependent)
- Dual diagnosis (psychiatric and substance use) is acceptable only if the substance use is secondary and does not require detoxification. If so, individuals are admitted to the Sanford Detox Center.
