Our Outpatient Eating Disorder Treatment Program

Our outpatient eating disorder treatment programs provide structured therapy and support while allowing individuals to continue living at home and participating in daily activities, such as work or school. This level of care is often beneficial for those who have already completed a higher level of care, such as residential treatment, or those with milder symptoms that can maintain stability in their daily lives.

Sanford Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders (SCTED) outpatient facility is located at our Sanford West location. Outpatient eating disorder treatment allows for the continuation of everyday activities while integrating effective strategies learned in treatment. Our outpatient center is a beautiful place to gather for treatment and community support. We welcome current patients, family, and Sanford Behavioral Health's alumni.

Programs that we offer include:

  • Residential
  • Day Programs (otherwise known as PHP)
  • Half-Day Programs (Intensive Outpatient or IOP)
  • Supportive living
  • Outpatient recovery groups
  • Flexible family programming
  • Outpatient psychiatry
  • Medication management
  • Multi-disciplinary team
  • In-person and telehealth options
  • Nutrition services

Our specialists include psychiatrists, psychologists, registered dietitians, nurses, and therapists who specialize in eating disorders. By focusing on the individual, we can help develop long-term tools for recovery and healing.

What Are Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs)?

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) services are designed for individuals diagnosed with eating disorders, according to DSM V or ICD-10 criteria. This includes eating disorders such as:

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED)

PHP patients need more care than what can be provided in an outpatient or intensive outpatient setting. A PHP offers a higher level of care than usual to stop any symptoms that could cause physical or mental deterioration. We provide services and approaches that support our patients and their recovery, such as:

  • Nutrition education
  • Cooking and supervised therapeutic eating experiences
  • Group and individual therapy sessions
  • Family therapy
  • Medical monitoring
  • Regular psychiatric evaluations
  • Recreational therapy sessions
  • Nutritional screening
  • A structured daily check-in with staff
  • Therapeutically supported snacks and lunch
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Crisis safety planning
  • Aftercare planning
  • Case management services

PHPs typically take place during the day, allowing individuals to return home in the evening. This level of care allows an individual to fully immerse themselves in their treatment while still being able to participate in daily activities outside of treatment.

What Are Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are for people who can manage daily life but need more support than outpatient treatment. For example, a patient in IOP may be transitioning from a higher level of care, such as a hospital, residential, or partial hospitalization program. The IOP program allows individuals to continue their life activities, such as work, school, or childcare, and attend treatment.

We currently offer three small group therapy sessions as part of our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clinical therapists and registered dieticians lead the groups. SCTED groups provide a safe environment for support, encouragement, and mutual accountability. There is a cost for these groups, and insurance often covers the cost of treatment. Eating disorders that we treat are:

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED)

Services that we offer in our intensive outpatient eating disorder treatment program include:

  • A structured daily check-in with staff
  • Regular nursing assessments
  • Three days of programming at least three hours per day
  • Therapeutically supported snacks and lunch
  • Individual, marital, and family therapy
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Experiential therapy
  • Nutritional therapy and education
  • Body image therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Meal planning and supervised meals
  • Yoga and mindfulness
  • Clinical consultation and supervision

Our facility understands that every patient is unique and deserves a comprehensive and personalized treatment plan for their eating disorder. Therefore, our clinical and medical teams work together to create individualized programs that target all aspects of your condition. We also offer support and guidance for aftercare planning as individuals transition into daily life.

Goals are set collaboratively between patients, family members and staff and are monitored weekly.

How Does Outpatient Therapy Support Patients?

Outpatient therapy is for individuals who have completed a higher level of care and can manage daily life. It still provides recovery support, but on a less intensive level. Sanford Behavioral Health offers individual and family counseling sessions to address the psychological aspects of an eating disorder and nutrition education to help establish healthy eating habits.

Our outpatient eating disorder treatment program also includes support groups, which offer a community of individuals in recovery and a safe space for accountability and encouragement. Online therapy sessions are available for those with transportation or scheduling difficulties.

Our Virtual and Telehealth Programs

Sanford Virtual Treatment, or telehealth, offers the same evidence-based practices that our in-person programs provide, but in the comfort and safety of home. Classes are text-based and conducted through video calls using smartphones or computers. Virtual outpatient treatment is real-time, with a master’s level clinician as the facilitator. Programs offered virtually are our:

  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Outpatient programs
  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Eating disorder programs
  • Individual and family counseling

Under HHS.gov guidelines, our telehealth programs are HIPAA-compliant and insurance-eligible. Our easy-to-use programs include online assessments for entrance to any of our virtual addiction treatment programs.

“At Sanford Behavioral Health, we are expanding our outpatient services for eating disorders and substance use disorders, based on the needs we are seeing in the community. Because of our medical and clinical depth, we are well positioned to increase PHP and IOP tracks at our outpatient centers. And the natural addition of Sanford Supportive Housing facilitates helping individuals outside of the Grand Rapids area or those stepping down from residential treatment.” Sarah Bono, Sanford Executive Vice President, Business Development
