We offer flexible, innovative, individualized programs that work with your real life.
What are Outpatient Programs?
Sanford Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders (Sanford CTED) outpatient facility is located at 1003 Parchment Drive SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan. We offer flexible, innovative, individualized programs that work with your real life. Outpatient eating disorder treatment allows for the continuation of everyday activities while integrating effective strategies learned in treatment.
Sanford CTED Outpatient Center is a great place to gather for treatment and community support. We welcome current clients, family and Sanford alumni. Programs offered are:
- Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
- Outpatient
- In-person and telehealth options

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) services are designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with eating disorders, according to DSM V or ICD-10 criteria. This includes:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED)
For more on what we treat, go to the Eating Disorder Treatment page. Treatment includes symptom management. PHP requires an intensity of service delivery that is beyond what can safely be delivered in an outpatient level or intensive outpatient level of care.
Individuals in a PHP program are in need of a high level of structure and intensity of service delivery in order to stop symptoms that could lead to physical or psychological deterioration. Nutrition education sessions are held to challenge distorted and inaccurate food beliefs; cooking and supervised/therapeutic eating experiences act as exposure/response prevention activities; and group and individual therapy sessions are designed to address the core issues underlying the eating disorder behavior and develop more adaptive coping skills.

PHP Treatment Services Offered
Our core PHP services include individual, family and group therapy, medical evaluation and monitoring, support, individual and group nutritional therapy provided by a registered dietician. A typical week of Partial Hospitalization Programming would include the following:
- Screening & orientation to treatment
- Nutritional screening, including nutritional status and eating disorder behaviors
- Mental health screening using the DSM or ICD classification of Mental Disorders
- A structured daily check-in with staff
- Regular nursing assessments
- 5 days of programming at least 6 hours per day.
- 1 Nutrition Education/Nutritional Therapy group per day
- Therapeutically supported snacks and lunch
- Lunch that is planned by dieticians. At least one meal per week is prepared together with the support of a dietician.
- 1 Psychotherapy group per day
- 1 Multi-family group therapy session per week
- Therapeutic community outings for exposure response work as determined to be appropriate
- 1 individual therapy session per week
- 1-2 nutritional therapy sessions per week that include meal planning for the week.
- Psychiatric evaluation and follow-up as needed
- Crisis safety planning (when necessary)
- Aftercare/continuing care planning & referrals
- Case management services
- Meal planning and support

Goals are set collaboratively between patients, family members and staff and are monitored weekly.
Learn More About Our Free Insurance AssessmentIntensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Intensive Outpatient Programs are for those who are functioning adequately in their lives but need more support and structure than outpatient therapy. Also, an individual in IOP may be transitioning from a higher level of care, such as a hospital, residential, or partial hospitalization programs. The IOP program allows individuals to continue their life activities, such as working, school or child care and also attend treatment.
We currently offer three sessions of small group therapy as part of our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The groups are led by clinical therapists and registered dieticians. Our groups offer a safe environment for support, encouragement, and mutual accountability. There is a cost for these groups, and insurance often covers the cost of treatment. We treat:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Avoidant Restrictive Food and Intake Disorder (ARFID)
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED)
