Family Health Matters – Eating Disorders
Thanks to Shelley Irwin and WGVU’s Family Health Matters for including us in their panel of experts to discuss eating disorders. Joining Shelly were Sanford Behavioral Health clinical liaison Dr. Anna Flores, Kathy Robinson, parent, and Gail Hall, executive director of Michigan Eating Disorder Alliance.ย Some of the questions the panel answered:
- What is an eating disorder?
- What are the signs and symptoms?
- Is is a warning sign to have unexplained medical conditions?
- Who is at risk?
- When should you ask for help?
- What is body dysmorphia?
- Is family involvement significant to recovery?
“A big symptom we see is unexplained medical issues. This person is unwell, and we can’t figure out why. Interestingly, less than 6% of sufferers present as medically underweight. So, the stereotype that people with eating disorders are thin, white women is not representative of the majority. People with eating disorders can fly under the radar. We may see weight changes, hiding the body, choosing not to engage with food or social situations.” Anna Flores,ย DCN, MSN, CNSc
