Why is a Full Range of Mental Health Treatment Essential for Lasting Recovery?

A continuity-of-care model for individuals transitioning from residential to outpatient services lowered readmission rates for mental health conditions.
At Sanford Behavioral Health, we frequently get calls from people who have been to detox or treatment for mental health issues before. Often, they have tried various forms of treatment that do not work. That is why a full range of mental health services (a continuum of care) is essential for achieving lasting recovery. At Sanford Behavioral Health, we provide comprehensive and personalized treatment for individuals diagnosed with addiction, eating disorders, and mental health conditions.
We utilize a “continuum of care,” which means providing support at every level of recovery, from intensive inpatient treatment to virtual therapy, all under one roof. Our programs are all entry points to the recovery continuum of care. When individuals are comfortable within the Sanford organization, it makes for a smooth transition from one level of treatment to the next. A person steps up or down through levels of care.
Better Outcomes
“There are a lot of vulnerable populations who do not get the treatment they need. They live in anguish due to mental health concerns. Perhaps a person is going to substance use disorder treatment, but they don’t feel better after they stop using; that is a recipe for relapse. Even worse, when they stop using, another mental health issue might crop up to fill the void. At Sanford, we provide a medical evaluation within 24 hours of admission, including a physical examination, orders for appropriate services, face-to-face consultation, and a risk assessment with a personal safety plan.” Tracy Rogers, LPC, Sanford Chief Executive Officer
We also complete a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment as soon as we admit someone. In other words, we get to know our residents, helping them determine their individualized treatment plan or the next steps after medical detox. With EZ Admissions and Clearances, we can admit people on the same day, addressing concerns before they escalate into a crisis. We can also serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization, as studies show there is insufficient capacity to treat current needs.
In a study by the National Institutes of Health, Individuals who began with a full continuum care (inpatient followed by outpatient) achieved better outcomes in alcohol and drug use, psychosocial health, and readiness to change than those starting directly with outpatient-only care. A higher continuity-of-care model for residents transitioning from residential to outpatient services lowered readmission rates for mental health conditions:
- One-year readmission dropped by 7%.
- Two readmissions dropped by 6%
- ER visits within 90 days decreased by 13%
- Subjects reported a better quality of life long-term

The benefit of becoming a Sanford Behavioral Health client is that we can assess and transition an individual during all stages of treatment within the same building, the same location, and with the same psychiatrist and clinical team. Consequently, once someone is part of the Sanford continuum of care, regardless of what transpires throughout their lifetime of recovery, they have a powerful alliance.
