Mental Health Crisis in Michigan – New Campus Opens to Address Need
Mental Health Crisis – Addressing the Need
[Grand Rapids, Michigan 05/21/22] โ May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the theme is โtogether for mental healthโ. The newly opened Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus reflects the theme, because its creation has been a team effort. Rae and David Green, life-long Grand Rapidanโs, founded Sanford in 2015 with a mission to elevate the effectiveness and availability of treatment for individuals diagnosed with addiction and mental health disorders. And after seven years of intelligent, controlled growth, Sanford Behavioral Health is licensed and accredited as a thriving substance use disorder, eating disorder, and mental health treatment center.
ย
David Green, Founder and CEO says, โWe are proud that even during a pandemic we were able to secure robust community and insurance partnerships, attract talented medical and clinical providers, and experience this kind of growth. Opening Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus is a giant step toward furthering our mission to raise the bar on mental health treatment in Michigan.โ
A Beautiful Place to Heal
After a year long renovation, Sanford West is open for business! The hallmarks of Sanford Behavioral Health, such as original artwork, custom furniture, and an abundance of light are apparent in the new facility. As with all five Sanford facilities, it is a beautiful place in which to heal. Further, we’ve divided program areas into more intimate spaces. By doing so, there is flexibility and a sense of community that most institutionalized centers do not have. Sanford West is also well positioned to treat high acuity patients with an integrated approach to addiction, eating disorders and mental health conditions. And a multidisciplinary team of medical and clinical professionals backs all Sanford programs.
First Standalone Residential Eating Disorder Treatment Center in Michigan
Sanford West is located at 15146 16th Avenue, Marne, Michigan (12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids). Notably, it houses the first standalone residential eating disorder treatment center in Michigan. There are also addiction and co-occurring mental health beds, and a medical detox center. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Gilbert Masterson says, โWe see patients in so much pain. They are physically ill because of their substance use or eating disorders, and 85% of our patients have co-occurring psychiatric issues as well. They need evaluation and long-term medical and psychiatric care. To this end, our ultimate goal is to stop the pain.โ
Rae Green, JD, LPC, CAADC, president and founder of Sanford Behavioral Health says, โThe need for addiction, eating disorder and mental health treatment in Michigan is dire. Data show that Michiganders go untreated or leave the state just to find the support and treatment they need. This is due to the severe shortage of effective treatment providers. Also, state and federal medical experts say the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened individualsโ mental health issues.โ
