Job Summary

The role of the Clinical Director is to manage the organization’s clinical department by assisting with training and providing clinical guidance for staff members. This role is responsible for day-to-day administrative tasks, supervision of assigned clinical and support staff, and collaboration with specific staff members to ensure clinical concerns are being addressed. Clinical staff include LMSW, LPC, CADC, Recreational Therapists, and Dietitians.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Oversees all clinical and treatment services and the staff associated with those responsibilities.
  • Develops clinical programming with the clinical team.
  • Oversees non-clinical programming and non-clinical program staff.
  • Provides oversight and supervision of clinical interns.
  • Assists in recruiting, hiring, discipline, training of the clinical team.
  • Uses administrative capabilities in the electronic medical record to audit patient charts and develop new forms as needed.
  • Works with care teams to help determine appropriate level of care for patients.
  • Assists with weekly schedules in cooperation with Clinical Managers.
  • Provides clinical guidance, training, and direction to all assigned clinicians.
  • Promotes an environment that facilitates innovation, creative solutions, and empowerment.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Managers to create efficiencies and develops processes that assist in documenting the variety of services provided at Sanford.
  • Approves time sheets and conducts annual reviews for assigned clinicians, as well as collaborates with clinicians to set annual performance goals.
  • Works with the COO to maintain appropriate staffing to accommodate admissions of new clients.
  • Guides clinical team on organization’s initiatives that include accessibility to treatment and the importance of the continuum of care for all programs.
  • Works with leadership team on the development of new programs.
  • When applicable, provides and documents provisions of face-to-face supervision for all clinicians whose license requires it.
  • Collaborates with intakes of residential and outpatient clients.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Managers and other members of the multidisciplinary team (admissions, medical and clinical) to address clinical and screening concerns.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources (HR) on performance and staffing concerns, as needed.
  • Attends, as necessary, weekly meetings to address clinical needs and concerns.
  • Provides consultation services and objectively addresses situations with clients and their families.
  • Provides crisis intervention services, as needed.
  • Conducts a quarterly documentation review with the Clinical Managers and other clinicians to ensure quality measures are being met during the clinical treatment process.
  • Plans and coordinates activities that foster teamwork to continuously improve communication amongst the team and increase efficiencies in the organization.
  • Collaborates with the Program Director of Substance Use Disorder (SUD), regarding concerns related to the management of SUD programing. This includes review and reinforcement of residential and client policies and rules.
  • Monitors clinical hours and ensures efficient allocation of clinical assignments at all facilities.
  • Assists Clinical Managers in securing clinical coverage as needed, including management of vacation schedules.
  • Ensures that weekly program schedules for clients are in compliance with insurance standards of care.
  • Oversees and promotes inclusion of family members and loved ones in the client’s episode of care.
  • Provides support to clinicians as needed regarding including family and/or loved ones in treatment.
  • As necessary, works with the HR department to address staffing needs, concerns, and other employment related concerns.
  • Ensures that all documentation of services provided is completed within 24 hours of services being rendered.
  • Identifies training opportunities for clinical team and works with HR team to implement trainings.
  • Models and holds assigned clinical staff to high ethical clinical standards.
  • Protects patients’ rights by maintaining confidentiality of medical, personal, and financial information.
  • Adheres to established Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and employee handbook.
  • Participates in staff development and training, including staff meetings, in-service trainings and annual trainings required by Sanford Behavioral Health on a timely basis.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in social work, limited psychologist, licensed counselor, or equivalent with appropriate licensure and/or certification with the State of Michigan, required.
  • Minimum of two years of management experience, required.
  • Inpatient Psychiatric treatment experience, preferred.

Knowledge/skills/abilities

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality on all client records and business-related records, as required under HIPAA guidelines.
  • Expertise in the dynamics of addictions.
  • Good communications and decision-making ability. Skills in conflict resolution. Comfort in authority role.
  • Knowledge of management techniques and disciplinary actions.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal dynamics and counseling theories.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and style of employees.
  • Ability to work within a team setting and create an environment where all are valued and work together cohesively.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as typing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to clearly express and exchange ideas by means of spoken words to impart oral information to employees or others accurately or quickly, engaging in sometimes lengthy conversations or presentations.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs daily.
  • Must be able to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with your hand or hands.
  • Must be able to perceive sound by ear to interpret oral information from employees or others accurately or quickly.
  • Work will be performed in an office environment with fluctuating temperatures.
