Who says mental health treatment has to feel like a hospital?
We are proud of the work we’ve done to prepare JOHN (Just One Hero Needed) for its opening this week. While staff members put the final touches on preparing guest spaces, we realized once again that JOHN is a beautiful place to be. From the stained glass windows in the dining room to the leather couches in the lounge to the side porch overlooking downtown Grand Rapids (and its spectacular sunsets), JOHN is the perfect place to heal from a mental health condition.
Located in a restored historic home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, there is nothing about JOHN that feels cold or sterile. It’s not a hospital; however, JOHN offers care backed by a full team of medical doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed clinicians.. At JOHN, we provide first responders and Veterans with a peaceful, home-like atmosphere where clients can relax and focus on well-being. Why is a beautiful environment good for mental health? We list six reasons below.
Who Says Mental Health Treatment Has to Feel Like a Hospital?
Veterans & First Responders Detox, Residential, and Day Programs
1. Comfort reduces anxiety.
A homelike environment makes our clients feel safe and relaxed from the start. Instead of the sterile feel of a hospital, JOHN encourages calm, which lowers stress and supports emotional regulation. High-quality communal meals support physical and emotional wellness and reintroduce the social aspects of eating.
2. JOHN promotes a sense of belonging.
When treatment feels personal and inviting, individuals are more likely to open up, engage, and connect with staff and peers. Connection is a key factor in recovery and healing. Group therapy is comprised of fellow Veterans and first responders who understand the journey. Trauma-informed programming addresses the unique challenges, and licensed therapists and staff at all levels have lived experience or strong personal ties to the military or first responder communities.
3. A homelike environment encourages daily life skills
The routine in the house naturally encourages healthy habits, such as shared meals, relaxation and conversation spaces, and outdoor walks, which can be carried into life after treatment. We welcome the grounding presence of service dogs and provide on-site support meetings to foster additional connection with like-minded individuals.

We offer weekly individual and family therapy.
4. Beauty inspires hope and healing.
Every detail—artwork, natural light, and inviting spaces—shows our clients they’re worth the care they receive. Aesthetic comfort boosts mood, creativity, and motivation. JOHN is hidden in plain sight on a quiet street, fostering camaraderie, safety, and privacy.
5. JOHN supports connection.
Inviting spaces encourage social connection. Cozy lounges, open kitchen areas, and common areas make it easy for clients to interact and find support from others on the same path. Restoring connection with loved ones and developing healthy communication patterns is part of the therapy. We offer weekly individual and family therapy sessions, as well as free family education and support programs.
6. Healing environments engage mind, body, and spirit.
From comfortable mattresses to outdoor therapy spaces, JOHN complements evidence-based therapy with restorative surroundings! A supportive environment with specialized therapies reminds our clients they are safe, valued, and not alone. With comfort and connection at the foundation, Veterans and first responders can focus fully on the work of healing.
