Creating Space for Connection: LGBTQ+ Focused Programming Coming to Sanford

Creating another opportunity for individuals to feel understood, supported, and connected.
During Pride Month, Sanford Behavioral Health is reflecting on the importance of creating spaces where all individuals feel seen, respected, and supported. As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusive, affirming care, we are developing LGBTQ+ focused programming. An optional group will be available to individuals participating in residential treatment. Mental health, substance use disorder, and eating disorder treatment clients may join this group while continuing to participate in their primary treatment program.
“At Sanford Behavioral Health, we believe that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported exactly as they are. We recognize the disproportionate mental health challenges experienced by many LGBTQ+ individuals. We provide compassionate care where authenticity, safety, and healing can thrive.” Tessa Sterling, LMSW,
LGBTQ+ Focused Programming
The LGBTQ+ focused group creates a safe, confidential, and affirming environment. Participants explore topics that may impact their mental health and recovery. Programming includes both process-oriented support and educational components, based on client needs and clinical appropriateness. Discussions will include identity, belonging, stigma, minority stress, trauma, relationships, family dynamics, chosen family, recovery support, and building affirming community connections.
Participation is voluntary, with clear expectations around privacy, respect, and psychological safety. Our LGBTQ+ initiative reflects Sanford’s broader commitment to individualized, trauma-informed care that recognizes how identity, lived experience, community, and stigma can shape the treatment and recovery process.
As we continue to build this program, our focus remains on clinical excellence, patient safety, staff readiness, and the affirmation of best practices. Most importantly, we hope to create another opportunity for individuals to feel understood, supported, and connected as they pursue their healing journey. We say, “Come as you are.” Everyone deserves a place where they can heal without hiding who they truly are.
