World Mental Health – A New Survey on Wellbeing

World mental wellbeing shows a profound drop from 2019 to 2020.


A new survey by Sapien Labs and The Mental Health Million Project, shows a comparison of the mental wellbeing profiles of eight countries. It also highlights differences across age and gender groups, and addresses lifestyle factors that drive mental wellbeing. The survey also includes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on worldwide mental health.


The survey, Mental State of the World 2020, launched in April of last year, focused on/compared adults over 18 in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the English-speaking populations of India, South Africa, and Singapore. The project will continue in multiple languages in 2021 and beyond. And while the pandemic was a significant factor, the data collected from 49,000 respondents, show long-term challenges that were only exacerbated by the pandemic.

Our mental wellbeing score [spanning the spectrum from clinical to thriving] is a reflection of how well-equipped we feel to handle life’s challenges, rebound from adversities and capitalize on opportunities to contribute productively to society … Importantly, therefore, mental wellbeing, although related, is not the same as happiness or life satisfaction.

Survey Key Findings:

Overall mental wellbeing shows a profound drop from 2019 to 2020.

The average mental wellbeing score was highest for respondents from Singapore and the United States and lowest for those from the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Mental wellbeing was statistically higher in males than females across all countries combined. But reversed in favor of females after age 65.

Young adults are in crisis. “44% of young adult respondents reported clinical level risk (compared to 6% of 65+). This adds to the growing alarm of a profound societal mental health crisis.”

Nonbinary/third gender adults reported substantial suicidal thoughts and intentions compared to other groups.

Sleep, social interaction, and exercise notably improve all facets of mental wellbeing.

57% of people experienced a range of negative health, financial or social consequences that impacted mental wellbeing during the pandemic.
