What’s in a Name? Announcing Sanford Behavioral Health

Sanford Behavioral Health

Where it all began… the pillars Sanford House at Cherry Street for Women

Rae and David Green established Sanford Addiction Treatment Centers (Sanford House) in 2015 with a ten bed women’s facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their mission was to elevate the effectiveness and availability of treatment for individuals diagnosed with substance use disorders. They also sought to provide science-based programs in a hospitable setting, restoring Grand Rapids’ historic homes as treatment centers. The Greens’ premise was that a pleasing environment provided a first step toward their patients’ self-care, a reduction in stigma, and served as a vehicle to healing.

Raising the Standard of Treatment

The need to raise the standard of addiction and mental health treatment in Michigan has only grown since Sanford was established. Today, Sanford Behavioral Health, is licensed and accredited as a substance use disorder, eating disorder, and co-occurring mental health treatment facility, serving the state of Michigan and beyond. Sanford is led by a growing team of medical, clinical and support personnel providing medication-managed and science-based treatment to residential, outpatient, and telehealth patients.

What’s in a Name?

What’s in a name? Over the past year, we have spent a great deal of time thinking about what the name “Sanford Behavioral Health” means. As we complete our full continuum of care with our new Detox Center and roll-out innovative programs in 2022, we do not want to forget the Sanford mission, which has remained consistent since its inception.

Our mission is to promote mental health, resilience and wellbeing; provide effective and accessible addiction and mental health treatment; reduce stigma; and support and educate those who are in recovery, their families and communities.

This is Sanford Behavioral Health Today:

Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus

Pardon our dust! Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus – stay tuned for more addiction, eating disorder and mental health programs.

Sanford West is our newest treatment facility, located 12 miles from downtown Grand Rapids, in Marne, Michigan. The campus comprises 18 acres and enhances and compliments the existing services at Sanford Behavioral Health. It is also well positioned to treat acute patients with an integrated approach to addiction and co-occurring disorders, eating disorders, mental health and medical conditions.

Sanford Detox Center

Rounding out our full continuum of care, the Sanford Detox Center (open now) provides medically monitored detox for acute withdrawal. Medical detoxification is the process of safely ridding the body of alcohol and/drugs and managing the resultant withdrawal symptoms. During the detox process, a patient may experience mental and physical symptoms such as body discomfort, nausea, or anxiety. Consequently, medical/psychological monitoring is necessary. Every individual experiences detox differently, and every patient is assessed to determine whether medically monitored detox is appropriate or if withdrawal symptoms can be managed in an outpatient environment.

Stay Tuned!

Stay tuned, because early in 2022 Sanford West will bring several new initiatives to the Michigan behavioral health landscape.

Sanford Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders

Sanford Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders (CTED) is a state-of-the-art treatment program in an intimate, personalized setting. Therapy may be individual or group; and we utilize CBT, DBT, ACT, interpersonal, and family systems therapy. The groups are led by clinical therapists and registered dieticians. Therapy includes members of the immediate family whenever possible, especially with younger individuals still living at home.

We also practice a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach, which honors body diversity and encourages movement for health and enjoyment, not to lose weight. Our ultimate goal for everyone we treat, is to return to Intuitive Eating behaviors – eat when hungry, stop when full. Through therapy and individualized nutrition counseling, individuals reconnect with their body and learn to trust themselves.
