Addiction Treatment
You are not alone on this journey.
Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical condition involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individualโs life experiences. People with addiction use substances or engage in compulsive behaviors and often continue despite harmful consequences. Recovery from addiction is possible. Many people recover and lead fulfilling lives (roughly 22.3 million Americans).
Assessments
A medical and psychiatric assessment is the first step to treatment. Then, each individual undergoes a thorough medical and psychiatric examination to confirm a diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan.
Assessments identify the location of care within Sanford Behavioral Health's campus. They also determine the appropriate level of care, current physical and mental health symptoms, life issues, medical and mental health treatment history, substance use history, family dynamics, trauma history, presence of risk to self or others, and more.
At Sanford Behavioral Health, our experts offer comprehensive, individualized treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions. We understand that addiction is a complex disease, and our integrated approach helps individuals make lasting changes to support long-term sobriety and overall wellbeing. For more information about our addiction treatment programs, contact our team at 616.202.3326. We can help you find a suitable program for you in one of our comfortable facilities.
What Is Addiction?
The condition of addiction manifests in many ways, creating unhealthy functioning patterns. Missed appointments, social incidences, and broken promises are hallmarks of alcohol and drug dependence. Health and relationships are also negatively impacted. In addition, there are often legal issues or the threat of incarceration to deal with.
When you struggle with this disease, you can feel immense guilt, shame, or hopelessness about your substance use. At Sanford Behavioral Health, you and your family will learn about the disease of addiction and begin to heal together. You are not alone on this journey. Sanford Behavioral Health offers addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment at all levels of care, with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) available. This includes medically monitored detox, outpatient, and withdrawal management support to our patients with in-person and telehealth options.

Our Addiction Treatment Team
Medical
Psychiatrist-led medical services with 24-hour support for all residential patients. All levels of care include on-site supervision by medical doctors with specialties in psychiatry or addictionology, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, registered dietitians, and certified recreational therapists.
Clinical
In addition, the Sanford clinical director leads our clinical teams. Teams comprise masterโs level or higher licensed social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists. In addition, registered dietitians support the clinical team with regular individual, group, and family support and education. And case managers are assigned to each patient, ensuring proper communication and transitions to other levels of care and ancillary services.
Assessment
Upon admission to every Sanford program, we provide a complete physical examination and assessment. We also monitor vitals and physiological symptoms, recommend and treat co-occurring physiological and psychological symptoms associated with the primary diagnosis, and manage medication. In addition, an assessment will determine which location within the Sanford Campus an individual will be assigned.

Alcohol
Drinking alcohol interferes with the brainโs communication pathways. Alcohol use can lead to mood, behavior, thinking, memory, and coordination changes. The use of alcohol reduces the function of behavioral inhibitory centers in the cerebral cortex, which makes a person feel less inhibited.
Opioids and Opiates
Commonly prescribed to treat pain, opioids include heroin and medications such as hydrocodone, Oxycontin, and Vicodin. These substances cause severe physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms that often require medically aided assistance to discontinue.
Cannabis
Cannabis is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs. Problem users may rely on the substance to combat feelings of anxiety and depression.
Sedatives
Sedatives dangerously slow breathing and heart rate when misused. They also interfere with memory and decision-making.
Stimulants
Stimulant medications disrupt normal communication between brain cells. Stimulants flood the brain with dopamine, contributing to their highly addictive nature.
Inhalants
Inhalants are those substances consumed through inhalation and momentarily slow brain activity. Household substances such as cleaning fluids and paint thinner are potential inhalants.
Synthetic Drugs
Synthetic drugs contain fabricated materials and often contain ingredients unknown to users, and the results are often unpredictable.
Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens are a wide-ranging group of drugs that alter a personโs awareness of their surroundings, thoughts, and feelings.
