What Is Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Our Sanford Outpatient Center is licensed by the state of Michigan and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Our innovative treatment center is just 12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. Outpatient addiction treatment can benefit those who have already completed residential treatment and those with work or family obligations that make it difficult to enter a residential program.

The Care We Offer with Our Outpatient Programs

Our outpatient programs offer those struggling with addiction or substance use disorder the chance to learn new coping skills and develop a support system to help them recover. The duration of outpatient programs can vary, and our team will work with each individual to create a personalized treatment plan. Outpatient programs can also serve as continued care for those finishing a partial hospitalization program or residential treatment program. Services provided in outpatient programs can include:

  • Weekly group therapy sessions
  • Individual and family therapy
  • Treatment planning
  • Aftercare planning
  • Introduction to community support and resources
  • Welcoming atmosphere for residential and IOP alumni

Our team is here to support and guide individuals in their recovery journey, no matter where they may be in the process. We offer a variety of outpatient programs to meet each individual's needs and provide them with the tools they need to create a substance-free life.

 Day Programs

Partial hospitalization (PHP) or day programs is one level of care higher than the intensive outpatient program for addiction. PHP provides therapy, structure, and accountability during the day while allowing patients to practice their learned skills in their homes, at our Sanford Supportive Housing, or in a sober living environment after daily programming concludes.

PHP offers our patients the chance to learn therapeutic coping skills that will help reduce the negative consequences of alcohol and drug addiction. PHP includes six hours of group therapy per day, five days a week. Some of the services we offer include:

  • Daily group therapy using an evidence-based curriculum
  • Weekly medical visits and follow-ups
  • Screening and orientation to treatment
  • Multidisciplinary diagnostic assessments and exams
  • Education on early-stage relapse management
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Crisis safety planning
  • Supportive housing
  • Family programs and support groups
  • Aftercare planning and referrals
  • Case management services
  • Nutrition and wellness education
  • Individual and family therapy
  • Personalized treatment planning
  • Lunch provided daily

Services like these can help prepare individuals for the transition back into their daily lives and provide support throughout recovery. [Read More]

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Sanford Behavioral Health provides an intensive outpatient program to those struggling with addiction, health issues, and trauma to help reduce the harmful effects these have on their lives. An IOP provides structure and accountability while encouraging patients to integrate their treatment into their personal, home, and work life. Program duration is typically 18 sessions which cover approximately six weeks. Our IOP includes the following services:

  • Three group therapy sessions each week
  • Individual and family therapy
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Diagnostic assessments
  • Medication treatment and medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Supportive housing
  • Outpatient detox withdrawal management
  • Continued care for those finishing a residential program
  • Flexible evening sessions for working adults and those with daytime responsibilities
  • Family programs and support groups
  • Aftercare and continuing care planning

An IOP offers those struggling with addiction a chance to begin their recovery journey and receive the support they need in a safe and structured setting.

Virtual Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs

Virtual addiction treatment, or telehealth, offers the same evidence-based practices that our in-person programs provide, but in the comfort and safety of the home. Classes are given through video chatting on either smartphones or computers. Virtual outpatient treatment is real-time with a master’s level clinician as a facilitator. Under HHS.gov guidelines, our telehealth programs are HIPAA-compliant and insurance-eligible. Our easy-to-use programs include online assessments for entrance to any of our virtual addiction treatment programs.

Supportive Housing for Our Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs

Supportive housing for those in our outpatient programs is available for those who live far from the Grand Rapids area and want to experience treatment in person. It is also for patients looking for supportive living options other than immediately returning home after residential treatment. These individuals may live alone or with others not in recovery.

Supportive housing provides structure and support before the independence of returning to day-to-day activities. Extra support can help those new to recovery practice their recovery skills and build confidence. Supportive housing can be a helpful segue while family members attend education programs on addiction and recovery.

Continuum of Care at Sanford Behavioral Health

At Sanford Behavioral Health, we create a consistent system of treatment that guides patients through all levels of treatment intensity. A long-term continuum of treatment programs, classes, and resources is key to recovery. We have created myriad opportunities for our patients to stay connected and supported. Our outpatient groups, support services, and alumni groups are easily accessible and convenient. Telehealth is also an option for those who prefer it.
