Job Summary

The role of the Psychiatrist is responsible for diagnosing and treating psychiatric disorders within all units of Sanford Behavioral Health. This role works closely with staff to address the needs of clients and adjust medications as required.  

​Role and Responsibilities​

  • Provides the highest standard of medical care for Sanford Behavioral Health psychiatric disorder clients and participates as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team.  
  • Is available on-call or assigns another physician to take call responsibilities.  
  • Participates in the creation, implementation, and revisions of various aspects of the Sanford Behavioral Health treatment programming.  
  • Completes evaluations (medical, psychiatric, history and physical) for clients, as needed.  
  • Provides medical education for clients, staff and their collaterals, as needed.   
  • Works through client concerns with the nursing team to determine a possible solution.  
  • Attends weekly case reviews with the Medical Director to present evidenced-based practice treatments.  
  • Consults with the medical team, including the Advanced Practice Providers, as needed including but not limited to: client’s care, laboratory values and in-house screening assessments.  
  • Works with the admission’s team to review prospective clients for Sanford Behavioral Health. 
  • Assists the Admission’s team with intakes and determines level of care needed. 
  • Weekly case reviews with APP to facilitate evidenced-based practice treatments. Provides supervision to interns, as needed. 
  • Develops treatment plans according to the needs of the clients and extent of emotion, social, cognitive, developmental, or behavioral disorder. 
  • Provides crisis intervention, as needed. 
  • Treat clients using psychotherapeutic methods and medication, monitoring the effects of any medication and adjusting treatment, when necessary. 
  • Participates in staff development and training, including staff meetings, in-service trainings and annual trainings required by Sanford Behavioral Health on a timely basis.  
  • Performs other duties, as assigned. 

​Qualifications and Education Requirements​

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine, required. 
  • Full licensure to practice in the State of Michigan with full prescription privileges including ability to prescribed opiates for Substance Use Disorder diagnoses (xDEA number), required.  
  • Certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, or actively moving toward this certification, required 

Knowledge/skills/abilities

  • Must possess willingness to work as a team member in the context of a multi-disciplinary team.  
  • Ability to represent Sanford Medical Specialists and Sanford Behavioral Health in a manner that creates positive awareness and support for its mission.  
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder and eating disorders.  
  • Ability to adhere to and knowledge of all HIPAA guidelines. 
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR). 
  • Communication skills, self-motivation, organizational skills, critical thinking, and good decision-making abilities.  
  • Ability to work within a team setting and create an environment where all are valued and work together cohesively.  

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.  
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking (4-8 hours.) 
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs. 
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as typing for extended periods of time.  
  • Must be able to clearly express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information to employees or others accurately or quickly, engaging in sometimes lengthy conversations or presentations.  
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs daily.    
  • Must be able to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with your hand or hands.  
  • Must be able to perceive sound by ear to interpret oral information from employees or others accurately or quickly.  
  • Work will be performed in an office environment with fluctuating temperatures.
