Detox Treatment
Medically monitored, safe and comfortable detoxification from drugs and/or alcohol.
As part of our full continuum of care, Sanford Behavioral Health provides medical (or sub-acute) detox treatment for our patients. This treatment can include a medically monitored detox for acute withdrawal, withdrawal management, and outpatient support for post-acute withdrawal symptoms.
Our medical professionals work closely with individuals to ensure their well-being and comfort during detox. Sanford Behavioral Health is committed to helping our patients start their journey toward a healthier, substance-free life. Our detox treatment center is 12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus. For more information about our detox program, contact our team at 616.202.3326. We can help you find a suitable detox treatment for you.
What Is Detoxification?
Detoxification is safely removing alcohol and drugs from the body and managing the resulting withdrawal symptoms. When detoxing, patients can expect mental and physical symptoms like nausea, anxiety, and body discomfort. Some detox symptoms can be life-threatening. Although each person experiences detox differently, we decide if medically monitored detoxification is necessary for each patient or whether they can safely detox during residential or outpatient treatment.
Detox Assessment
Admission to detox treatment is based on assessing a personโs needs, preferences, and likelihood to benefit from medically monitored detox. We provide a medical evaluation within 24 hours of admission that includes:
- Physical examination
- Orders for appropriate service
- Face-to-face consultation
- Risk assessment with a personal safety plan
We also complete a comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessment as soon as we admit a patient into an appropriate program.
Detox Treatment
In addition to safe detox, we also provide individual and group therapy. Our medical detox program assists individuals experiencing the physiological and psychological effects of acute withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. Those who meet the criteria for this level of care are experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Consequently, they need 24-hour nursing care and regular physician visits. Patients at this level are unlikely to complete withdrawal without medical monitoring.
Detox treatment provides a 24-hour, medically safe, and secure setting. This includes nursing, professional care, and support services. Detox treatment also prepares and motivates our patients to continue treatment after discharge. Our patients often begin addiction treatment while in detox. Detox addresses the physical aspect of addiction, while addiction treatment addresses the emotional pain that underlies substance use. Detox and addiction treatment go hand-in-hand.
At Sanford, we want to see our patients succeed and create a better life for themselves in recovery. Our detox team helps patients decrease cravings for addictive substances, while also trying to understand how symptoms may tempt them back to an increased use. Our clinical and medical team ensures that our patients have a safe and comfortable withdrawal from drugs/alcohol. Itโs a rigorous experience, but well worth achieving.

Sub-Acute Detox or Medical Detox
Sanford Behavioral Health's detox treatment in Marne, Michigan, offers medical detoxification services 12 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. In this level of care, safe detoxification is the primary goal while providing individual and group therapy. The medically monitored programs assist those experiencing the physiological and psychological effects of acute withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. Those who meet the criteria for this level of care are experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, they require constant nursing care and routine check-ups.
Residential Detox
Withdrawal management in residential addiction treatment focuses on non-medical detoxification management, or post-acute withdrawal symptoms. This level of treatment is appropriate for those with no medical or neurological symptoms that require 24-hour medical monitoring. The primary providers are paraprofessionals who undergo training and are supported by Sanford Behavioral Health's nursing and clinical staff. Withdrawal management in a residential setting is available for intoxicated individuals and patients withdrawing from alcohol and other substances which are not at the acute (severe) stage of withdrawal.
Outpatient Detox
Outpatient detox or ambulatory withdrawal management is provided through Sanford Behavioral Health Outpatient Center under the direction of a licensed physician. Outpatient detox is for patients who are under the influence of substances or withdrawing from them but don't have symptoms that require around-the-clock care. Outpatient monitoring occurs with outpatient therapy and ย medication-assisted treatment (MAT). We evaluate all patients to confirm that they do not have any medical or neurological symptoms because of their substance use that would necessitate a higher level of care.
Alcohol Detox Treatment
Our alcohol detox treatment program at Sanford Behavioral Health helps patients safely detox from alcohol and can provide the first step of recovery for those struggling with alcohol addiction. Alcohol detox is the process of allowing your body to rid itself of alcohol and its toxic substances. During alcohol detox treatment, our medical and clinical professionals will assess each patientโs unique circumstances and customize a plan that fits their needs.ย
Medical Detox Treatment
Medical detox treatment can be an important part of your recovery from alcohol or drug addiction. Medical detox involves a medically supervised process designed to help minimize the risk of adverse effects of alcohol and other drugs. Our medical professionals at Sanford Behavioral Health are experienced in providing the highest standard of care for a safe and successful detoxification process.ย ย
Holistic Detox Treatment
Holistic detox treatment is also available to help patients recover from substance use disorder. Our holistic approach focuses on treating the entire person, including their mind and body. This type of detox treatment is helpful to patients because it focuses on the root cause of substance use disorder rather than just managing physical symptoms.ย ย
Drug Detox Treatment
At Sanford Behavioral Health, our drug detox treatment provides patients with a safe and supportive environment while they detox from drugs. We offer both medical and holistic drug detox treatment options so that each patient can find the type of care that works best for them. Our physicians, clinicians, nurses, and therapists specialize in helping patients manage physical symptoms and any mental or emotional distress associated with substance use disorder. ย
