Job Summary

The role of the Director of Finance and Accounting is to manage the day-to-day financial flow across the organization. This role works strategically to manage budgets, accounts, forecasts, key performance indicators (KPIs), compliance, and reports. This position is part of the Executive Team and manages employees within the Finance department.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Prepares the annual budgets and financial forecasts, as well as analyzes the performance towards financial goals on a routine basis.
  • Analyzes monthly financial data prepared by the Accounting Manager for trend analysis and opportunities for company improvement.
  • Identifies KPI’s, industry trends, and other performance metrics for the Company; develops strategic initiatives based on those metrics and trends.
  • Creates financial models based on financial analysis to support organizational decision making; develops automated reporting and forecasting tools for more efficient use of data.
  • Works closely with the Billing Department to track receivables, projects cash inflows, and monitors lead times for payment of claims by insurance payor.
  • Prepares financial analysis with an emphasis on capital investment, cash flow improvement, pricing decisions, and receivable/payable contract negotiations.
  • Prepares updated financial projections for each entity based on actual YTD performance.
  • Develops financial plans and monthly reports for department heads and equity owners.
  • Oversees the organization’s financial activities, including liquidity, ROI, reporting and forecasting; and serves in a strategic advisory role to the CEO and C-suite peers.
  • Reviews the monthly financial statements for accuracy and overall financial performance; discusses variances and strategies with C-suite peers monthly.
  • Prepares monthly and annual financial reports with variance and trend analysis.
  • Meets periodically with department heads to gather variance explanations and understand operational workflows and departmental/entity performance.
  • Works with C-suite peers to develop strategies for and manage progress regarding human capital management, census and revenue goals, and expense control, capital investment, cash flow management, and contract negotiations.
  • Oversees compliance with investor and financial covenants, including timely financial reporting and certifications, performance triggers, debt servicing, and loan covenants.
  • Prepares documentation needed to support compliance and loan covenant requests on behalf of CARF, lenders, investors and other external parties.
  • Managers employees on in the Finance department, including time clock review, disciplinary action, performance reviews, assisting in onboarding and offboarding.
  • Assists the Accounting Manager with annual, independent review of financial statements.
  • Assists with various financial-related ad hoc tasks and projects, as needed.
  • Participates in staff development and training, including staff meetings, in-service training and annual training required by Sanford Behavioral Health on a timely basis.
  • Adheres to the established Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and employee handbook.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, required.
  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance, preferred.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as an accountant, auditor, analyst, OR valid CPA/CMA certificate with at least two (2) years of professional experience as an accountant, auditor, or analyst.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks desktop.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (pivots, queries, etc.), required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Skilled in exceptional communication, self-motivation, organizational skills, critical thinking, and ability to make good decisions.
  • Skilled in mathematics and analytics.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of accounting principles
  • Ability to read and analyze financial reports.
  • Working knowledge of project management.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality on all client records and business-related records, as required under HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ability to work within a team setting and create an environment where all are valued and work together cohesively.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as typing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to clearly express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information to employees or others accurately or quickly, engaging in sometimes lengthy conversations or presentations.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs daily.
  • Must be able to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with your hand or hands.
  • Must be able to perceive sound by ear to interpret oral information from employees or others accurately or quickly.
