A little history - Sanford Behavioral Health (Sanford House), founded by Rae and David Green in 2015, has come a long way. Our mission to elevate the effectiveness and availability of treatment for individuals diagnosed with addiction and mental health disorders has led to nine years of intelligent, controlled growth. Today, Sanford is a thriving substance use disorder, eating disorder, and mental health treatment center.
The opening of Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus in 2022 was a testament to our commitment to raising the bar. Rae and David Green founded Sanford Behavioral Health (Sanford House) in 2015 with a mission to elevate the effectiveness and availability of treatment for individuals diagnosed with addiction and mental health disorders. After nine years of intelligent, controlled growth, Sanford Behavioral Healthย is now a thriving substance use disorder, eating disorder, and mental health treatment center. With the opening of Sanford West Behavioral Health Campus in 2022, Sanford was able to โraise the barโ on mental health treatment in Michigan and beyond.
Notably, Sanford West is not just another treatment center. It's a pioneer in its own right, housing the first standalone residential eating disorder treatment center in Michigan. This unique feature, coupled with a full complement of psychiatric and medical providers sets us apart. Our staff offers individualized solutions for long-term recovery andย a full continuum of evidence-based programs.
Under one roof - The hallmarks of Sanford, such as original artwork, custom furniture, and an abundance of light, are apparent at Sanford West. And although it is a big, sprawling campus, program areas are strategically divided into more intimate spaces. By doing this, we have the flexibility and can create a sense of community that most large, institutionalized centers do not have the ability to do.ย

Our Programs
Detox - Open with Beds Available!
Filled with light, original artwork, and similar to other Sanford Behavioral Health properties in the Greater Grand Rapids area, Sanford Detox Center at Sanford West is a beautiful space in which to heal. Comfort is key, as sub-acute detox is the process of safely ridding the body of alcohol/drugs and managing the resultant withdrawal symptoms. During this process, patients may experience mental and physical symptoms which include body discomfort (sometimes extreme), nausea, or anxiety. Some detox symptoms can even be life threatening.
At this level of detox, patients are unlikely to complete withdrawal without 24-hour nursing care and regular physician visits. They may also be experiencing co-occurring psychiatric or medical conditions which may put them at risk for a complicated withdrawal process. Consequently, led by Chief Medical Officer, Gilbert Al Masterson, M.D., Sanford has qualified healthcare providers who can help manage these co-occurring conditions while allowing an individual to safely detox from drugs and alcohol.
Eating Disorders Treatment - Making Michigan History!
Sanford Comprehensive Treatment for Eating Disorders will open the first standalone eating disorder treatment center in April 2022. Sanford CTED provides a full complement of medical, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and nutritional therapy support for eating disorders. Sanford West was designed with clinical intention and awareness of the unique needs of those with eating disorders. Patients have access to specifically designed kitchens for exposure-response work and skill development. A team of registered dietitians with ED specialties support the clinical/medical team. The continuum of care includes residential treatment, PHP and IOP programs, outpatient psychotherapy, nutritional therapy, and in-person and telehealth group therapy.ย

Mental Health Treatment
Mental Health Treatment addresses the debilitating symptoms of a co-occurring mental health diagnosis (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, PTSD, panic disorders). Our multi-disciplinary team uses comprehensive assessments to ensure proper diagnosis and individualized treatment plans. Mental health treatment is provided in virtual intensive outpatient groups. Stay tuned for new programs, including residential and partial hospitalization programs.
Guiding Principles of Sanford West Behavioral Health Campusย
- Medical services include 24 hour/day support for all residential programs. All levels of care include on-site supervision by medical doctors with specialties in psychiatry and/or addictionology, advance practice providers, registered nurses and registered dietitians.
- We provide a full physical examination and assessment upon admission to Sanford West. We also provide ongoing monitoring of vitals and physiological symptoms, recommend and/or treat co-occurring physiological and psychological symptoms associated with the primary diagnosis, and manage medications.
- Our clinical teams are made up of masterโs level or higher licensed social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists and psychologists. Registered dietitians support the clinical team with regular individual, group and family support and education.
