Job Summary

The role of the Chief Medical Director is to oversee the healthcare operations of Sanford Behavioral Health and Lafayette Medical Specialists. This position works closely with all employees to aid in improving quality of care. Responsibilities also include evaluations and participation of medical education for clients and staff members.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Provides the highest standard of medical care for all Sanford Behavioral Health clients and participates as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Is available on-call or assigns another physician to take on call responsibilities.
  • Participates in the creation, implementation, and revisions of various aspects of the Sanford Behavioral Health treatment programming.
  • Completes evaluations (medical, psychiatric, history and physical) for clients, as needed.
  • Provides medical education for clients, staff and their collaterals, as needed.
  • Consults with Advanced Practice Provider (APP) as needed including but not limited to: clientโ€™s care, laboratory values and in-house screening assessments.
  • Works with the admissions team to review prospective clients for Sanford Behavioral Health.
  • Assists the admissions team with intakes and determines level of care needed.
  • Works through client concerns with the nursing team to determine a possible solution.
  • Completes weekly case reviews with APP to facilitate evidenced-based practice treatments.
  • Participates in staff development and training, including staff meetings, in-service training and annual trainings required by Sanford Behavioral Health on a timely basis.
  • Works with the HR department to address staffing needs, concerns, and other employment related concerns.
  • Supervises all medical and psychiatric services.
  • Collaborates with Sanford Behavioral Health to arrange for a covering physician to provide services in the event of temporary absences.
  • Provides general oversight over the delivery of client care and outcomes at the facility.
  • Ensures that treatment modalities are appropriate.
  • Reviews and approving Sanford Behavioral Healthโ€™s patient care policies, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Conducts client chart reviews, as requested.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine, required.
  • Board Certified Psychiatrist, required.
  • Full licensure to practice in the State of Michigan with full prescription privileges including ability to prescribe opiates for Substance Use Disorder diagnoses (xDEA number), required.
  • Certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, or actively moving toward this certification, required

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks such as typing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to clearly express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information to employees or others accurately or quickly, engaging in sometimes lengthy conversations or presentations.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs daily.
  • Must be able to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with your hand or hands.
  • Must be able to perceive sound by ear to interpret oral information from employees or others accurately or quickly.
