“Recovery” is a word we hear a lot in the mental health field. Recovery is what all those with mental health and substance use disorders strive for. But what is recovery? And how has the definition of recovery changed over the years?

What is Recovery?

Recovery is a process of change through which people improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives and strive to reach their full potential.

Substance Use and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA)

Today on the Anatomy of Addiction Podcast we discuss the nuances of recovery.  We also talk about the role of medication-assisted treatment, how long it takes to reach wellbeing, and what to do if you relapse. Special guests are: Rae Green, JD, LPC, CAADC and Jenny Selent, LMFT. We are sponsored by Sanford Behavioral Health.

The advances in neuroscience are contributing to the change in the definition of recovery. Because we know now that addiction is a chronic, progressive disease and healing is also progressive. As a result, we need to get an individual to the stage of healing where they have choice and control.

Jenny Selent, LMFT

When someone gets to the chronic progressed stage of the disease, the using aspect is indelibly etched in the physiological brain circuitry. So, when we talk about people, places and things as triggers, it might be 20 years down the road and still conjure up those  memories…

Rae Green, JD, LPC, CAADC
